Losec capsules belong to a group of medicines called proton pump inhibitors, which work by reducing the amount of acid produced by your stomach.

Omeprazole is the active ingredient in losec. It is a member of the class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors. They function by lessening the quantity of acid your stomach secretes.

The following conditions are treated with losec:

• ‘Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease’. Here, stomach acid escapes into the gullet, the tube that connects your throat to your stomach, producing pain, irritation, and heartburn.
• Stomach or duodenal ulcers are located in the upper region of the gut (gastric ulcer).
• Ulcers that are contaminated with the ‘Helicobacter pylori bacteria. Your doctor may also recommend antibiotics if you have this problem in order to treat the infection and promote the healing of the ulcer.
• Ulcers brought on by NSAID-related medications (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs). If you are using NSAIDs, losec can also be used to prevent ulcers from developing.

Losec 20mg has a pink body and a brown cap and comes in blister packs or bottles.  These capsules are available on prescription only.  They must be stored under 30 degrees C, and protected from moisture.  The capsules should be used before the expiry date.
